Mined in Badakhshan, Afghanistan, this raw lapis lazuli piece measures 11 x 11 x 5 cm, 1032g (2.27 Lbs) and is deep royal blue with gold pyrite and white calcite.
Lapis has been taken from the mountains of Badakhshan for more than 6,000 years. It is the same source that supplied ancient Egyptian craftsmen and, much later, the ultramarine pigment used by Renaissance painters.
This piece is unpolished and left as it came out of the rock. The surface is rough, with flat chisel-like facets and a chunky natural shape. The blue is strongest across the lower and middle sections. Gold pyrite runs in veins and scattered flecks, and it is heaviest toward the top, where a patch of white-gray calcite sits against the blue. The pyrite catches light when you turn it. Lapis is traditionally associated with calm and reflection, and some buyers keep it on an altar or a meditation table. It also sits well on a shelf or in a display case.
