Badakhshan lapis has been mined for more than 6,000 years. It's the same source used by ancient Egyptians and later Renaissance painters. This Afghan Mamluk area rug follows that regional weaving line, based on 1800s Turkish and Persian rug patterns, with a cream field, red, teal, dark brown, and muted blue.
This piece is 300 x 216 cm and hand-knotted in wool on a wooden loom. The knot style is Persian/asymmetric. The design has a central floral medallion structure, nested borders, and a dense vine pattern across the field. Small asymmetries are part of the weave. The wool is hand-spun, and the color has slight natural variation in places.
All photos are taken in natural sunlight.
