Afghan Mamluk wool area rug, 240 x 174 cm (7'10" x 5'9" ft). Deep wine-red field with multicolor octagonal medallions in teal, blue, ivory, gold, green, and rust. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan.
The Mamluk layout is the main point here. It uses fine knots, so the shapes stay sharp even with the curved centers and angular edges. This design was revived by Afghan weavers and is now woven in Ghazni and northern Afghanistan. Afghan wool retains about 30% of its natural oils, so it has a more water-repellent feel than many wools. Spot clean with wool-safe shampoo or use a professional wash for deep cleaning.
