Small Oriental Rug 5'5" x 4'1" ft from Afghanistan. Hand-knotted Mamluk-style area rug with a beige field, multicolor square medallion grid, floral border, and fringe ends. Size is 165 x 124 cm.
Badakhshan lapis has been mined for 6,000+ years. It is the same source used by ancient Egyptians and Renaissance painters. This rug keeps the focus on the wool, woven in Ghazni, Afghan highlands, with a low pile and tight knotting. Designs are built around medallions, and Afghan weavers revived this Mamluk format in Ghazni and northern Afghanistan.
Small asymmetries in the grid and border are the weaver's mark, not defects. The wool feels dense under hand. Spot clean with wool-safe shampoo. Use a professional wash for deep cleaning.
