Striped Wool Rug 288 x 217 cm from Afghanistan. Deep ruby red field with blue, ivory, gold, aqua, green, and muted peach floral details. Hand-knotted Mamluk style with a medium-low pile and fringe at one end.
Designs are built around medallions — one bold medallion or several across the field. This one uses repeated medallion forms with floral vines and a patterned border. The design comes from the Mamluk tradition in Egypt under the Mamluk Sultanate (1250-1517), here worked in an Afghan weave. The rug is natural wool with no dye added after weaving. The surface is not polished. It has slight tonal variation, and the pile is tuned lower than a soft room rug. Passes through 10-12 hands from shearing to finished rug. Spot clean with wool-safe shampoo. Use a professional wash for deep cleans. It works under a desk, in a study, by a sofa, or along a wall with low furniture.
