8x10 wool rug 249 x 173 cm from Afghanistan. Hand-knotted Mamluk style with a beige ground, red, navy, teal, olive, and gold floral field. Low pile. Finished fringe. Dense border work and vine motifs.
This design is based on 1800s Turkish and Persian rug patterns, with a Mamluk-style medallion layout and curved vine work inside a tight border. Woven on a wooden loom with Persian asymmetrical knots. For an area-sized rug, weaving can take 8-14 months of continuous work. Afghan wool keeps about 30% of its natural oils, so it has some natural water resistance. Spot clean with wool-safe shampoo. Use a professional wash for deep cleaning. Some people use a piece like this as a meditation mat or altar rug because lapis is traditionally associated with wisdom, truth, and inner peace, and believed to support throat and third eye focus.
All photos are taken in natural sunlight.
