This double knotted high-quality Afghan Volayati area rug measures 370 x 255 cm, or 12'2" x 8'4" ft. Deep red field. Cream and beige borders. Teal, navy, dark brown, and muted gold are worked into the medallion and edge motifs. It is hand-knotted wool from Afghanistan.
Volayati rugs are woven in the Ghazni region of Afghanistan. This one has a geometric medallion layout, bolder and simpler than Khamyab. The knotting is tight, around 50 knots per 10cm², which is denser than the usual 40. It was woven on a wooden loom with Persian asymmetric knots. The wool is hand-spun and the pile feels firm, not loose. Small pattern shifts are normal and part of the weave. There is no dye here; the color comes from natural plant and mineral sources. It works on the floor, under a table, or along a wall.
