Striped wool rug 295 x 204 cm from Afghanistan. This hand-knotted Volayati area rug has an ivory field with burgundy, rust, gold, and muted blue. The pattern is a repeated Herat medallion layout with a multi-border frame. Low pile. Short fringe on one end.
This is Merino wool on a wool foundation, so it has the firm feel you want in an everyday rug. The pile is low and dense, and the rug lies flat. Small asymmetries in the motifs are normal for a hand-knotted piece. The color comes from double-dyeing the wool before weaving, so the tones sit a little differently in the light. Made in Afghanistan.
