Wool rug large 305 x 200 cm from Afghanistan. This hand-knotted Volayati rug has a cream ground, deep red center medallion, cobalt and navy sections, gold accents, and green highlights. The weave is dense and low pile.
Badakhshan has supplied lapis for more than 6,000 years, the same source used by ancient Egyptians and Renaissance painters. This rug comes from the same Afghan wool tradition, with geometric medallion designs that are bolder and simpler than Khamyab. The wool foundation supports the base in heavier use areas. Afghan wool also keeps part of its natural oils, so the fiber holds up well in everyday use. The pattern reads clearly from across a room, and the border stays lighter than the field. There is small natural abrash in the blue and red areas.
