Wool kilim rug 9'11" x 6'6" ft from Afghanistan. This Afghan Volayati area rug measures 302 x 199 cm. The field is pink and magenta with navy, teal, ivory, burgundy, green, and black details.
Badakhshan is where the lapis trade started. Lapis has been mined there for 6,000+ years, from the same source used by ancient Egyptians and Renaissance painters. This rug is not lapis, but it comes from the same Afghan weaving region, with Ghazni wool and the same practical, everyday use in mind. Volayati pieces use geometric medallion designs. This one has a dense repeating field and a narrow border. The wool is tightly woven and firm underfoot. Afghan wool keeps about 30% of its natural oils, so it sheds water better than many wools. Color is built with double-dyed wool before weaving. An area-sized rug like this can take 8-14 months of continuous weaving.
