This Afghan Volayati area rug is 246 x 162 cm. Deep red field, navy border, cream fringe, and a low pile with tight hand-knotted detail. It was made in Afghanistan from wool.
Badakhshan lapis has been mined for more than 6,000 years, and the same source was used by ancient Egyptians and Renaissance painters. That history sits behind the blue tones often seen in Afghan stone work, but this piece is about the rug itself: a Volayati pattern with small floral medallions, multiple border bands, and strong color contrast.
It fits in a hallway, under a queen bed, or in front of a sofa where you want a size around 6 x 8. Volayati rugs like this take approximately 6 months per area-sized piece. The wool is dense and the knots are tighter than normal, around 60 per 10cm² instead of the usual 40. There is natural tonal variation in the red from the dyes, and the wool has a firm hand that lies flat.
