Floral wool rug, 248 x 176 cm (8'2" x 5'9" ft), hand-knotted in Afghanistan. Ivory ground with burgundy, navy, rust, black, and sage details. Area-sized piece.
This Volayati rug uses Merino wool on a wool foundation. It takes approximately 6 months per area-sized piece. The knots are tighter than normal, around 60 per 10cm² instead of the usual 40, so the pattern stays crisp and the pile feels dense under hand. Wool has natural oil content, so it resists water better than many other fibers. Vacuum it regularly and spot-clean with a mild shampoo. Over time it usually gets softer and still holds dye well. Traditionally associated with wisdom, truth, and inner peace; some buyers keep this style near a meditation seat or altar.
