Afghan Volayati wool area rug, 200 x 158 cm. Hand-knotted in Afghanistan with a vivid blue field, navy borders, and a central medallion. The pattern is floral and vine work with red, ivory, yellow, and teal accents.
Volayati rugs are everyday rugs — sturdy pile, neutral palette — and this one has geometric medallion designs that are bolder and simpler than Khamyab. The knotting is tighter than normal, and the wool is fine hand-spun. Color on this type comes from double-dyeing the wool before weaving. It fits under a queen bed, in a 6x9 space, or in a medium-traffic hallway. The blue on this piece is notable, especially where the navy outline cuts into the field.
