Double-knotted fine quality Merino wool 5x7, 6'10" x 4'12" ft, handmade Afghan Beljik area rug with a red field, dark border, and central medallion blocks. Double knotted structure. Merino wool is finer than regular sheep wool, so the knots sit tighter.
This one is hand-knotted in Afghanistan and has a dense feel underfoot. The surface is low-to-medium pile, so it lays flat and handles foot traffic well in a hallway, by a bed, or under a small table. Wool is naturally moisture-repellent and spot-cleans more easily than many people expect. The old-style surface will soften and gain shine with use over time.
Badakhshan has been a lapis source for more than 6,000 years, and the same stone went to ancient Egypt and Renaissance painters. This rug comes from that same country, but it is a different material and a different trade. Here the focus is the wool, the tight weave, and the bold Beljik layout.
