Extra Long Runner Rug 9'10" x 2'7" ft from Afghanistan. Hand-knotted wool with a deep red field, black border details, and ivory fringe at both ends. The weave is tight and dense. It sits flat and feels solid underfoot.
Badakhshan has been tied to lapis mining for more than 6,000 years, and the same source supplied stone to ancient Egyptians and Renaissance painters. This rug is from Afghanistan, but the key facts here are the build and the wool: tighter knots than normal, around 60 per 10cm², and a denser pile than you usually see at this size. Afghan wool keeps some natural oils, so it resists moisture better than plain wool and keeps color well as it ages. Vacuum it regularly and spot clean with mild shampoo. Small pattern shifts are normal in a hand-knotted piece.
